It supports the position formats of Lat/Lon, UTM/UPS, Maidenhead, MGRS, Loran TDs and other grids, including user grids.

This GPS system is rated high on its performance. It has a WAAS enabled, 12 parallel channel GPS receiver that continuously tracks you, and uses up to 12 satellites to compute and update your position. It updates at the rate of 1/second, continuous. It has a built in quadrifilar with external antenna connection (MCX). Additionally, it also features a barometer and a barometric altimeter.

The Acquisition times are approximately 15 seconds for warm, 45seconds for cold and 2 minutes for Auto Locate.

The GPS system is also known for its accuracy. At a position of lesser than 15 meters, it gives up to 95% accuracy and a velocity of 0.05 meter/sec steady state. The DGPS (USCG) accuracy is for a position of 3-5 meters, 95% typical and velocity of 0.05 meter/sec steady state. The DGPS (WAAS) accuracy is for a position of lesser than 3 meters and velocity of 0.05 meter/sec steady state.

It is compatible with RS232 with NMEA 0183, RTCM 104 DGPS data format and proprietary Garmin. It is also DGPS, USCG and WAAS capable.

Though the Garmin GPSMap76S is a fixed navigating device that can be used in any vehicle for multiple purposes, it finds its best application and suitability for marine and hiking. The battery used for this device is 2 AA types which gives you a run time of up to 16 hours. The body of this user friendly device is made up of plastic. It is grey in colour and is waterproofed. The minimum operating temperature is -15 degree C and maximum is 70 degree C. Indeed it is built to last under tough conditions. The accessories include PC cable and mounting bracket.
