It has a built-in marine basemap and also accepts BlueChart offshore marine cartography. Therefore detailed depth contours, inter-tidal zones, wrecks, navaids and many other point of interest can be featured. You can expand its possibilities by adding maps. It can accept Garmin data cards and supports DSC (displays position data from DSC capable VHF radio). It supports acquisition times, 45 sec (cold and 15 sec (warm).
Garmin GPSMAP 178C Marine GPS System utilises See-thru technology which makes fishing an easy and interesting task as it can expose fish hidden under cover. Fish Symbol ID further helps in identifying fish targets. The white line indicated whether it is hard or soft bottom. This highly efficient Garmin GPS system is capable of measuring the depth of underwater objects with the adjustable depth line. It can also show water temperature log and graph.
The built-in 4.5" LCD display has a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels offering an easy-to-read semi-transparent digital read out. In the screen you can see sonar images clearly. The CCFL display illumination and the split-screen zoom are other features of the CSTN screen.
Audible features include proximity alarm, anchor alarm, arrival alarm, off course alarm, Clock Alarm, Fish Alarm, Shallow/Deep Alarm, Low Battery/Voltage Alarm and Water Temperature Alarm.
This marine GPS system has NMEA 0183 and RTCM SC-104 DGPS as interfaces. The device which is fixed in form factor has the dimensions 16.0 x 12.5 x 7.1 cm (W x H x D) and weighs 24 oz.
